The villagers have a tough time figuring out just how the very old man with enormous wings fits into their lives. Because this character does not agree with their concept of just what an angel should look like, they attempt to determine if the aged guy might actually be an angel.
In attempting to demonstrate the source of the customer, the villagers eliminate faith in the possibility of him having an angel because he fails to stick to their structured world.
Marquez keeps the individuality of this very elderly man with enormous wings ambiguous to review the villagers and, even more commonly, organized religion for having too little faith to believe in miracles that don't comply with their own master story.
To be able to keep the origin of this old guy a mystery, Marquez utilizes a technique known as magical realism. This mixture of fantasy and reality will help to eliminate some of their grandeur supporting the possible angel.
